It is very important that the customers be given accurate information as to how to take care of their garments, so they can make informed purchase decisions concerning the care characteristics of competing products and to enable consumers and cleaners to avoid product damage caused by the use of improper cleaning procedures.

Before you decide what care instructions you will put on the care labels, test the items/products under consideration and make sure that the care instructions are proper. In testing for care instructions, effects of your care instructions on the following properties of clothing should be taken into consideration:  

• Shrinkage (dimensional stability)

• Colourfastness. Tendency to yellow if the product is white.

• General condition-overall appearance after washing or dry cleaning (such as durable press appearance, opening-up or fraying of seams, etc.)

• Change in body or hand.

• Delamination

• Change in seam and/or fabric strength.
